Is your cat frequently scratching, sneezing, or showing signs of discomfort? These symptoms may be caused by allergies, an often-overlooked but increasingly common issue in cats.
At DermVet, we specialise in identifying and managing your cat’s allergies through advanced diagnostic techniques, drawing upon years of experience in the field.
Cat Allergenics
Cats, like humans, can develop allergies to a range of triggers, such as:
- Feline Atopic Skin Syndrome (FASS) – Feline Atopic Skin Syndrome (FASS) is an incurable disease that is incredibly difficult to diagnose in cats, and can be managed well in most cases with the right treatment. There is no one size fits all treatment, meaning each case must be assessed individually according to its severity and the resources you can provide as the owner. We have a range of ways to test and treat this condition professionally at our clinic.
- Flea Bites – A flea allergy is one of the most common forms of allergic skin diseases in cats, and it presents itself differently on cats than dogs – with redness, loss of hair, and raised ulcers both on the skin, lips or inside the mouth.
- Food – Food allergies can take time to develop, meaning that your pet can easily become allergic to something it has otherwise tolerated for years. In cats, food allergies can manifest with similar physical signs to a flea allergy or Feline Atopic Skin Syndrome (FASS) with spots and scabs along their back and sides. The only way in which to deal with a cat’s food allergy is to put them on an elimination diet.
This can prove a problem if you have an outside cat that can easily source food from unknown places, so they must be carefully monitored and kept inside as long as possible during their treatment.
